Volkswagen-Polo-Lineup

Volkswagen will reveal a quartet of subcompact Polos at next week’s Geneva Motor Show. Naturally fuel efficiency is a top priority with these models but the company hasn’t forgotten about performance.

Vee-Dub’s updated Polo family features a lineup of new EU-6 engines that help lower fuel consumption by up to 21 percent. The cars also treat drivers with new infotainment and assistance technologies, features that are normally found on larger, more expensive vehicles.

Polo TSI BlueMotion

Since its introduction the Polo BlueMotion has been one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles to be found on the road anywhere in the world thanks to its miserly diesel. Now Volkswagen engineers have introduced an economy-minded version of this car with a gasoline powerplant. The TSI BlueMotion model features an all new turbocharged, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection that provides about 89 hp. With a combined fuel consumption score of 4.1 L/100 km (approximately 57 miles per gallon) the company claims it’s the thriftiest gas-powered five-seater in the world.

Polo TDI BlueMotion

Of course the original diesel version forges ahead as well, but with new refinements. Its three-cylinder compression-ignition engine puts out roughly 74 hp, but on the European driving cycle it only consumes 3.1 L/100 km, combined. That’s a whopping 76 mpg and a figure that makes it the most efficient diesel five-seater in the world! With such low consumption (and a 45-liter fuel tank) the car offers motorists a claimed driving range of 1,400 kilometers, which is more than 860 miles.

Polo BlueGT

The sporty version of the Polo gets cutting-edge cylinder deactivation and a 10 hp boost in output versus today’s version. The car’s 1.4-liter four-banger now delivers 150 ps, roughly 148 hp. Power is routed to the front wheels through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The goal with this car was maximum performance and driving fun with minimum fuel consumption and it sounds like engineers have delivered. The Polo BlueGT’s lowest consumption figure is 4.7 L/100 km.

CrossPolo

Not much to report with this subcompact crossover/SUV/hatchback vehicle. The 2014 CrossPolo gets new colors in its paint palate, fresh seat materials, new wheels and smoked rear lights.

Technology

Each of these Polo models has its own unique attributes that appeal to certain segments of the buying public, but they each benefit from a suite of advanced technologies. A new electro-mechanical steering system improves the drive; City Emergency Braking, Automatic Post-Collision Braking and a Driver Alert System are also on the menu, to name but a few of the available features. Drivers can even get electronically controlled dampers on the Polo GT.
